L'autore più certo di questa illustre famiglia è un Geremia figlio d'Ildebrando che viveva negli ultimi anni del X secolo, il quale godeva vasti possedimenti in Mugello, di alcuni dei quali ci fece donazione al Capitolo di Firenze. Egli fondò e beneficò circa sessanta chiese e monasteri. Di lui figlio fu Ridolfo rammentato come testimone ad un placito del 1020, cui assistè come uno dei più nobili e potenti baroni della Toscana, e che fu padre di numerosa prole. Da lui prese nome tutta la consorteria che si appellò de filiis Rodulphi e poi Firidolfi. Questa famiglia fu così potente che la maggior parte del Mugello era da lei posseduta, e tutta la provincia del Chianti dipendeva dalla medesima fin dal XI secolo, e capo luogo di tutto lo stato era il forte castello di Montegrossoli che i Fiorentini assediarono e presero nel 1182, e poi comperarono nel 1197, dopo
