Originaria di Fermo nelle Marche, sembra abbia tratto il proprio nome da quella città. Fino da remoto tempo fu domiciliata in Roma, da dove passò nel Trentino, fabbricando quivi sopra una collina presso l'Adige, di fronte a Bolsano, un castello che fu detto Firmiano dal nome dei suoi fondatori. Ebbero il feudo dell'Alpe Pompeago, quello di Kronmetz che fu poi chiamato di Mezzacorona, il castello di Englar, l'altro di Leopoldskron e le signorie di Mecher o Meggel e di Mistelbach nell'Austria superiore. I Firmian furono innalzati nel 1497 al grado di cavalieri banderesi; nel 1526 a quello di baroni, e più tardi con lettere patenti dell'imperatrice Maria-Teresa furono creati conti del S. R. I. Nel 1578 aveano già ottenuto l'alta dignità di marescialli ereditari del Vescovato principesco di Trento. Adolfo commendatore provinciale dell'Ordine Teutonico per la Burgandia d'Alsazia nel 1390; Carlo ministro plenipotenziario di Maria-Teresa alla corte di Napoli.
