E' tuttora ardua impresa precisare se discendano dalla prosapia dei Firuffini (de Filliis Rufini) signori di Serzé, ora Sezzadio, in epoca precedente alla fondazione di Alessandria (1168), oppure, secondo altra versione, siano originari di Bergamo da dove scesero alla testa di un nutrito stuolo di conterranei per popolare la nascente repubblica e condividere con i Firuffini e consortile, meglio dire: condizionare con la oro ingerenza, l'operato dell'amministrazione comunale in fase di assestamento. Se quest'ultima ipotesi fosse attendibile, il Ghilini li avrebbe certamente ricordati ed apparirebbero nell'elenco degli abitatori provenienti da terre al di quà e al di là del Po, il che è suffragato dalla presenza in Tortona sin dal 1137 del console Ottone Z. che con i colleghi il 19 maggio fa una donazione al monastero di S.Siro di Genova; il Cavagna Sangiuliani inoltre li annoverqa tra le famiglie più antiche di Voghera ivi viventi nei sec. XII
