Antica famiglia del perugino, con residenza nella città di Gubbio, di origini liguri, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia e del Mondo. Si ritiene che la famiglia sia giunta in Gubbio da Chiavari, ove fiorirono un Corrado, protettore delle Compere del Capitolo nel 1346, un Ardoino, anziano nel 1362; ed un Antonio ed un Pietro, con la stessa carica nel 1430 e nel 1451. L'origine di tal cognominizzazione, al dir di autorevoli genealogisti, andrebbe ricercata nel personale medioevale "Phophus", probabilmente portato dai capostipiti. In ogni modo, secondo quanto ci viene, la casata venne ammessa alla nobiltà per benemerenze acquisite nei confronti dei Della Rovere, dinastia che ebbe il dominio di Gubbio dal 1508 al 1631, quando, con la morte di Francesco Maria II Della Rovere, ultimo erede della casata, tutti i beni e tutti i feudi passarono, come da volontà testamentaria, allo
