Ad un Alberto signore di Fogliano (Reggio Emilia) console di Reggio nel 1180 risalgono le prime notizie del casato che del luogo stesso assunse il nome trasmesso alla discendenza dai due figli Guido eBarnaba; erano pure consignori del castello di Baiso e come tali, Guido fu costretto a prestare giuramento di fedeltà alla repubblica di Reggio che nel 1206 e 1209 lo elesse console. Si schierò contro Federico II a favore del papa Innocenzo IV del quale aveva sposato la sorella Verde figlia di Ugo Fieschi, che lo rese padre di sei figli tra cui Ugolino, futuro capo della fazione guelfa: espulso nel 1245 dai ghibellini vi ritornò nel 1252, combattè con i congiunti contro i Da Sesso ed i Torelli sottraendo a questi la signoria di Carpineto infeudata poi ai vincitori dallo zio pontefice; nel 1255 Ugolino fu podestà di Perugia, nel 1276 di Cremona e morì nel 1277
