É uma das mais antigas famílias de Portugal e cujo apelido muito se divulgou. Parece provir da linhagem dos de Riba Douro, descendento de D. Moninho Viegas, o Gasco, casaco com D. Valida Trocosendes, de quem foi filho D. Garcia Moniz, que os Mouros mataram na conquista de Riba Douro. Esta foi pai de D. Rodrigo Garcia, pai de D. Garcia Rodrigues, que se chamou da F. por ter o senhorio deste lugar, o qual tomou aos Mouros com seu irmão D. Paio Garcia. Foi também senhor do couto de Leomil, por doação do Conde D. Henrique no ano de 1102, e casado com D. Dordia Ramires, filha de D. Ramiro Pinhones, senhor de Távora, de quem teve D. Egas Garcia da F., chamado o Bufo, sucessor dos senhorios do couto de Leomil e da honra de F., rico-homem, marido de D. Maior Pais de Curveira, filha de D. Paio
