Antico ed illustre casato, sorto dall'unione di due nobili famiglie. La prima, ovvero quella dei Cruciani, godette nobiltà in terra di Toscana, dando a Firenze, tra il 1350 ed il 1409, ben sei Priori della Repubblica. Passata in Recanati, le venne riconosciuta la nobiltà, in persona di Cav. Lodovico, di Giuseppe, in data 29 settembre 1599. Inoltre, quando un Angelo Vincenzo si stabilì a Spello, nel 1773, ottenne la iscrizione a quella nobiltà, essendo stato degli anziani. La famiglia risulta iscritta nell'Elenco Ufficiale, col titolo di nobile di Spello (mf), in persona di Gioacchino, degli zii Ferdinando, Francesco e Giovanni e del figlio di Ferdinando: Giuseppe. La famiglia Cruciani alzò per arme. D'azzurro, alla banda d'oro accompagnata da due monti di sei cime dello stesso. La seconda, ovvero quella dei Fonzi, trae origine dalle ville di Chiavari.
