Ancient Lombard family, of clear and ancestral virtue, which has spread over the centuries in various regions of Italy. The origin of this cognomination, to say the least of illustrious genealogists, should be sought in the toponym Sant'Angelo in Formis, a fraction of the Capua municipality, probably the birthplace of a, today unknown, progenitor. In any case, this family, probably, was decorated with the knighthood, following the faithful services, lent to the Visconti, by a Rinaldo Formis, soldier under the banners of the lord of Pesaro, Carlo Malatesta, to whom Filippo Maria Visconti, in 1426, he entrusted the command, to thwart Venice.
