Antica ed illustre famiglia del Regno di Napoli, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia e del mondo. Leggenda narra che il capostipite dei Formisano fosse un cavaliere della città laziale di Formia, scampato alla distruzione della città ad opera dei saraceni nell'anno 842 e riparatosi in Napoli; da cui il cognome toponimico. In ogni modo, la chiara nobiltà di questa casata viene confermata dalla sua presenza in alcune pregevoli opere di araldica, tra cui la rara collezione di stemmi gentilizi comunemente nota come "Stemmario Mattei", compilata dal conte Edgardo Mattei, tra la fine del XIX secolo e gli inizi del XX. Inoltre, la famiglia Formisano, nel dispiegarsi dei lustri, si è sempre riuscita a distinguere grazie all'elevatezza dei personaggi a cui ha dato i natali.
