Ancienne et illustre famille du royaume de Naples, de vertu claire et ancestrale, qui s'est propagée au cours des siècles dans diverses régions d'Italie et du monde. La légende raconte que l'ancêtre des Formisanos était un chevalier de la ville latienne de Formia, qui échappa à la destruction de la ville par les Sarrasins en 842 et se réfugia à Naples ; d'où le patronyme toponymique. En tout cas, la noblesse évidente de cette lignée est confirmée par sa présence dans quelques précieux ouvrages héraldiques, dont la rare collection d'armoiries communément appelée "Stemmario Mattei", compilée par le comte Edgardo Mattei, entre la fin du XIXe siècle et le début du XXe.
