The empress Maria-Teresa with a diploma dated February 25, 1747, acted by the Senate of Milan in August of that year, granted the title of marquis transmissible by male birthright to Lorenzo Fornara; and Francesco I Imperat. with a sovereign resolution of 28 Jan. 1816 confirmed the ancient nobility of this family and the marquis title. The same was also ascribed to the patriciate of Pavia. Numerous authors of the family described events and characters, attributed various origins to it without any valid attestation. Modern historical criticism has, on the safe basis of the documents, accounted for the artificial genealogical reconstructions of those writers who, out of complacent spirit of flattery, claimed to have this family descended from noble and ancient prosapias like that of other families.
