La famiglia in origine si disse dei Dal Monte e godè del feudo castellano di Montone con Ugo Fortebraccio nel 1100. Da Ugo Fortebraccio uscì Andrea dei Conti di Montone detto "Braccio da Montone" condottiero famosissimo; fu dal 1 luglio 1416 signore di Perugia poi conte di Foggia e principe di Capua e dal 1423 principe di Aquila. Nel 1424 fu sotto le mura di Aquila sconfitto e fatto prigioniero dal Caldora Giacomo, vicerè e gran conestabile. La sua vedova Niccolina di Rodolfo II Varano, duca di Camerino, nel 1429 dovè ritirarsi a Camerino ove morì. Il figlio Ottone fu nel 1425 ucciso dai cittadini di Val di Lamone e Carlo militò per Venezia. Negli archivi comunali di S. Rufino e di S. Francesco in Assisi esistono interessanti documenti comprovanti l'indiscutibile ed ininterrotto dominio della famiglia in Assisi dal 1433. Nel 1435, in data 15 giugno, fu rogato dal
