Antica e nobilissima famiglia, che vuolsi tra le prime fondatrici di Venezia, ove giunse dalla città di Roma, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia e del mondo. Ebbe essa tribuni nei primi tempi e fu, alla serrata del Maggior Consiglio del 1297, ritenuta fra le patrizie. D'altronde questo casato si è sempre distinto per aver dato i natali a soggetti insigni per valore politico ed amministrativo. Si ricordino: Andrea Foscolo, senatore ed elettore del grande Enrico Dandolo; Marco Foscolo, politico, Provveditore alle Pompe eletto nel 1560; Leonardo Foscolo che, dopo aver sostenuto con somma virtù la Provveditoria generale della Dalmazia ed Albania, nel 1647 fu eletto Procuratore di S. Marco e nel 1651 Generalissimo di mare; Francesco Foscolo (1604 - 1663), militare; Giambattista Foscolo, duce di Candia nel 1631; Daulo Augusto Foscolo (1785 - 1860), ecclesiastico, che dal 1816 al 1830 fu
