La famiglia ha antichissime origini, e si stabilì nella Marca di Ancona, erigendovi in tempo immemorabile un castello a Piticchio di Arcevia. Ebbe onori della podesteria in parecchi comuni limitrofi ed è ricordata dal Compagnoni nella sua Reggia Picena. E' pure ricordata in documenti di storica importanza, in occasione di cruente contese marchigiane nel 1284, anno in cui viveva un valoroso capitano di cavalli Fossi. La Santa Sede Apostolica annoverò, tra i prelati di mitria, Giovanni Battista Fossi che ottenne l'alta carica di vescovo suffraganeo della città di Velletri. Morì nell'anno 1690, quando era pontefice Benedetto XIII, il quale molto lo stimava e lo aveva riservato per la porpora. Giuseppe Fossi ebbe pure, dal Supremo Gerarca, onori altissimi.
