Tra la fine del XIV e i primi del XV secolo i Pellegrini si trasferirono da Fossombrone in Arezzo dove, dal luogo d'origine, ereditarono il cognome. Nella nuova patria ottennero l'ammissione alla cittadinanza, nel 1464, in persona di Bartolomeo di Antonio, che esercitò nella lana e nella tinta, accumulando ingenti sostanze. Il figlio di Bartolomeo, Pellegrino, fece parte dei Priori del popolo nel 1496; e i discendenti di lui, nel 1597, furono dichiarati abili al gonfalonierato, al quale nel 1615 fu tratto Guido di Giov. Battista. In applicazione della Legge del 1750 sulla Nobiltà e Cittadinanza in Toscana la famiglia venne ascritta al patriziato aretino con decreto del 23 agosto 1756. Il più illustre della famiglia fu Vittorio di Giacinto (1754-1844), uomo politico di primo ordine e matematico, idraulio ed economista insigne. Dalla direzione delle opere di bonificamento della Val di Chiana passò, nel 1796, alla direzione degli affari
