Parece que não há só uma família deste apelido, em Portugal. Há uma família de origem genovesa, que se supõe principar em Lançarote de Franca (ou de Franqui), que alcançou o reinado de D. João I e casou com D. Leonor de Abreu, filha de Lopo Vaz de Castelo-Branco, moteiro-mor do mesmo Rei. Estes foram os progenitores de uma família de Francas.Timbre: duas lanças de prata, hasteadas de verde, passadas em aspa. Várias fontes bibliográficas confirmam as marcas por ela deixadas na história.
