Antica ed assai nobile famiglia del Regno di Napoli, di origine normanna, di chiara ed avita virtù, conosciuta come Franco, de Franco o de Franchis, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Le prime notizie relative a tal casato si rinvengono in Capua, città da cui i Franco furono esiliati nel 1066 a seguito della rivolta antinormanna, per poi farvi ritorno sotto la reggenza del principe Giordano II, con Landulfus et Landenulfus de Lufrancu. La famiglia ha diramato in diverse città, tra cui: Piedimonte d'Alife, Sant'Angelo d'Alife, Benevento, Mugnano del Cardinale, Sarno e Napoli, ove fu aggregata al Sedile di Capuana, sin dal 1269 nella persona di Giovanni. Tal casato fu decorato con molti e pregevoli titoli: patrizi di Capua, e Napoli; conti di Avella; marchesi di Taviano e duchi di Ascoli Satriano, Longano, Torre Orsaria. Essa ha inoltre posseduto numerosi feudi, tra cui: Calvi, Castro, Fontanarosa, Forino,
