Famiglia nobile ed assai antica, detta Franzesi o Franzese ma si disse anche della Foresta, e che fu originaria di Francia e signora di molti castelli nel Valdarno Superiore e in Valdelsa, tra cui di Staggia che vendette alla repubblica fiorentina nel 1361. Da questa famiglia nacque la celebre casata dei Bandinelli-Paparoni, la quale diede un Papa col nome di Alessandro III. Pietro-Paolo fu eletto Vescovo di Montepulciano nel 1757. Nel 1383 Guido di Francesco si fece di Popolo mutando il cognome in «della Foresta» e cambiando lo stemma in un partito d'azzurro e d'argento, alla fascia attraversante d'oro; per i suoi figli invece, lo stemma fu d'azzurro, al leopardo sedente d'oro, collarinato e incatenato d'argento. Essa è, senz'altro, tra le più antiche, e illustri, famiglie che dalla Francia, e dalla Spagna fiorirono ai tempi dei Regi Francesi della Carolea, e delle case reali Spagnole, Aragona, Castiglia e altre.
