Uma tradição não apoiada em nenhum documento, contudo, traçaria as origens dessa família patrícia genovesa aos Franzoni de Locarno, derivados por sua vez da união ocorrida no final de 1000, de um Giovanni Galba, cavalheiro de Dijon, com Pulcheria, filha do duque de Aquitânia; daí o sobrenome parecido com o adjetivo "francais". Um Matteo teria deixado sua cidade para Ligúria e talvez para Rapallo, de onde seus descendentes teriam se mudado para Gênova. O primeiro deste sobrenome que resulta em 1181 de um documento notarial agora disperso por Guglielmo Caligapalii, é um Paulo que pode ser considerado o progenitor da família Fransoni de Gênova. A partir do ano mencionado, é necessário avançar para o século 14 para encontrar homens com cargos públicos: entre eles Bartolomeu, sob o dogato de Domenico Fregoso. Em 1498, Giacomo di Gaspare foi contratado pela República para tomar posse do corsário Lavagnino, que infestava a Riviera
