Famiglia originaria della Catalogna, assai antica e nobile propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Alla fine del XIII secolo, la famiglia si stabilì in Mallorca, ponendo la propria abitazione nel villaggio di Alaro. Il primo cavaliere, di cui abbiamo nota è un Ramon Frau che, nel 1285, giurò fedeltà al re Don Alfonso III d'Aragona, come deputato per la città di Manacor. Un Francisco Frau, nel 1521, aiutò l'economia dell'isola, trasportando, su una galera di sua proprietà, ingenti quantità di grano, dal continente. Jaime Frau, nel 1764, venne nominato tenente dei granatieri del primo battaglione di Mallorca; un Joseph fu capitano e Cavaliere dell'Ordine di San Hermenegildo; un Ramon, illustre dottore in Medicina e Chirurgia, conseguì molti prestigiosi premi; suo fratello, Vicente Frau, era canonico della cattedrale di Palma.
