Le origini di questa famiglia risalgono ai primi secoli della fondazione di Venezia. Appunto data la remota epoca le notizie che riguardano i Frego non è facile controllarle e stabilire se rispondono alla verità storica. Tuttavia in un codice dei 1500 si legge che la famiglia venne da Lucca nel 791 et sono homini di grandissima Sapientia et di boni costumi. Dotti et limosinari. Dove fecero molte chiese. Una delle quali fu San Jacomo di Rialto, la qual fu fatta da ser Marco. Altri invece dicono che la erezione di quella chiesa di deve, nel 421, all'opera di Eutenipo. Il Malfatti vuole che una parte di questa famiglia provenga dalla Grecia. Certo nei primi secoli della forma sostanziale politica del governo veneto, i membri della famiglia appartennero a quel patriziato, e poi furono ascritti tra i nobili di Candia negli anni 1649, 1650 e 1653.
