Nome di una famiglia genovese di origine plebea ma salita in tal rinomanza da essere una delle più potenti. Si divise in vari rami che furono: i Fregosi Semprevivi, i Fregosi dalla Stanga, dal Sesto, dal Gancio, dall'Aquila, dal Pellicano, dai Paternostri secondo le insegne che presero. Dette alla repubblica dal 1370 al 1513 ben otto dogi, il primo dei quali fu Domenico che estese il dominio di Genova conquistando isole nel Mediterraneo, e l'ultimo Ottaviano che due anni dopo la sua elezione fu costretto di cedere il comando di Genova a Francesco I di Francia. Paolo e Federico vestirono la porpora cardinalizia, l'uno nel 1480 e l'altro nel 1539. Antonio, distinto poeta, visse alla corte di Ludovico il Moro. La presenza del motto nella bibliografia documentata della famiglia ci conferma l'avita nobiltà raggiunta della casata. Infatti l'origine del motto risale a circa il XIV secolo e deve essere ricercata
