In an act of September 1166 (de Rubeis: Monum. Eccl. Aquil.) With which the refugee Ulrico Marquis of Tuscany designated from Cividale to the Patriarch of Aquileja Ulrico (1162-1182) the dominion of five villages in Friuli, are among the witnesses Warnero or Guarnero di Faedis and his son Odorico. In another document of 1186 (de Rubeis 1. c.) Warnero himself is no longer said of Faedis, but of Cucanea; and this is the first memory of that name that the family assumed for having erected, between 1166 and 1186, the Cucagna tower above the Onomino hill near Faedis, and for having settled there definitively. But family tradition claims to make this lineage descend from an Odorico qu. Schinella di Auemberg, a Carinthian nobleman, who in 1005 obtained from the Patriarch Poppo to erect a fortified place near Faedis in defense of the Church of Aquileja.
