In un atto del settembre 1166 (de Rubeis: Monum. Eccl. Aquil.) col quale il profugo Ulrico marchese di Toscana designava da Cividale al Patriarca di Aquileja Ulrico (1162-1182) il dominio di cinque villaggi del Friuli, figurano fra i testimoni Warnero o Guarnero di Faedis ed il figlio suo Odorico. In altro documento del 1186 (de Rubeis 1. c.) lo stesso Warnero è detto non più di Faedis, ma di Cucanea; ed è questo il primo ricordo di quel nome che la famiglia assunse per avere eretto, a quanto sembre fra il 1166 e 1186, la torre di Cucagna sopra il colle onomino presso Faedis, e per esservisi definitivamente stanziata. Ma tradizione famigliare pretende di far discendere questa stirpe da un Odorico qu.
