Antica ed assai nobile famiglia emiliana, di chiara ed avita virtù, propagatasi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia e del Mondo. La famiglia affonda le proprie radici nella terra di Frignano, ove ebbe proprietà e feudi sin dal dodicesimo secolo. I Frignano, però, rifulsero nobilmente anche in Bologna ed in Modena. Tra i numerosi personaggi che hanno dato lustro al casato vi è certamente il Cardinale Tommaso Frignani, nato in Modena nel secondo decennio del XIV secolo, da Cesare, di Ottavio. Testimonianza delle sue elevate virtù sono conservate nelle memorie della storia. Fra queste ricordiamo Francesco Petrarca che in una lettera inviata a Urbano V il 1° gennaio 1369, sottolineò le qualità intellettuali e i meriti spirituali di Tommaso Frignani.
