Famiglia di Castiglione Fiorentino che occupò le prime cariche di quella importante terra anche prima del 1384, quando questa si sottopose alla repubblica di Firenze, che conservò ai nobili di essa i loro diritti e conferì loro la cittadinanza fiorentina. Si trova imparentata colle più cospicue famiglie della regione. Sotto il principato ebbe cariche ed impieghi alla Corte Medicea. Un ramo di essa si stabilì in Orvieto, ove fino dal 1577 fu ascritto agli onori della città. Nel 1509 Matteo aveva avuto dalla S. Sede il governo di Città di Castello. Negli atti allegati alla domanda per conseguimento della nobiltà cortonese, che gli fu conferita con decreto del 31 ottobre 1764, il postulante Neri di Cesare viene designato col titolo di conte. La famiglia è iscirtta nell'Elenco Ufficiale Italiano del 1922 col titolo di nobile di Cortona in persona dei discendenti Giuseppe e Pietro di Neri Cesare.
