Storica famiglia tra le più antiche ed illustri del patriziato napoletano e romano, derivata secondo alcuni, da un Annecchino Goto, stasbilitosi in Italia nel sec. VIII, e secondo altri, dalla nobilissima famiglia Anicia di Roma. Da Gaeta ove dimorò lungamente, dando dogi a quella repubblica a cominciare da un Docibile nell'a. 884, si diramò a Napoli, Roma, Anagni, Messina, Palermo, Siracusa, Benevento, Pisa ed in altre città. A Pisa con la Gherardesca, la Sigismondi e Gambacorta fu una delle principali quattro famiglie. Fu ricevuta nell'Ordine Gerosolimitano dal 1416, venne insignita del Grandato di Spagna di prima classe, del Toson d'oro, di S. Stefano, del R. Ordine di S. Gennaro, e del Supremo Ordine della SS. Annuzniata. Nel regno di Napoli occupò ereditariamente l'ufficio di Gran Protonotaro.
