Antica ed illustre famiglia detta Gagliani o Gagliano, originaria della Picardia, stabilitasi, primieramente, in Amalfi e, successivamente, in Salerno, con un Tiberio Pompilio, dottore in legge, che acquistò il feudo di San Mauro. Il di lui figlio, Giuseppe, venne decorato del titolo di marchese nel 1687; Matteo fu vescovo di Fondi nel XVIII secolo; Carlo, dei marchese di San Mauro, capitano del " XIV Reggimento Fanteria di Linea Sannio" ed il di lui figlio, Luigi Natale, guardia a cavallo della "Compagnia delle Reali Guardie del Corpo", parteciparono alla difesa del Regno delle Due Sicilie dall'invasione piemontese, nella campagna del 1860/61. Il casato, venne aggregato alla nobiltà di Trani ed iscritto nel Registro delle Piazze Chiuse del Regno, nel XIX secolo. Iscritta nell'Elenco Ufficiale Nobiliare Italiano anno 1922, in qualità di patrizio di Trani, predicato di San Mauro, dei marchesi di San Mauro. Altro ramo. Antica ed illustre famiglia Siciliana,
