Ancienne et illustre famille appelée Gagliani ou Gagliano, originaire de Picardie, qui s'est d'abord installée à Amalfi et, plus tard, à Salerne, avec un Tiberio Pompilio, docteur en droit, qui a acheté le fief de San Mauro. Son fils, Giuseppe, fut décoré du titre de marquis en 1687 ; Matteo était évêque de Fondi au XVIIIe siècle; Carlo, du marquis de San Mauro, capitaine du "XIVe régiment d'infanterie de la ligne Sannio" et son fils, Luigi Natale, garde à cheval de la "Compagnie des gardes du corps royal", ont participé à la défense du royaume de les Deux-Siciles de l'invasion piémontaise, dans la campagne de 1860/61. La famille a été agrégée à la noblesse de Trani et inscrite au Registre des Places Fermées du Royaume, au XIXe siècle.
