Família toscana antiga e muito nobre, com residência na cidade de Pistoia, onde havia uma tumba na Catedral, de virtude clara e ancestral, que se espalhou ao longo dos séculos em várias regiões da Itália. A clara nobreza da família é evidenciada por sua presença nos valiosos trabalhos: "Brasão e insígnias de Pistoia com notas históricas" do Dr. G. Mazzer e "Coleção Ceramelli Papiani", estabelecida ao longo de muitos anos por Enrico Ceramelli Papiani (1896 -1976), que é um fundo preservado nos Arquivos Estaduais de Florença e composto por quase 8000 arquivos, dirigido a famílias da Toscana de origem antiga, que fornecem informações genealógicas e heráldicas extraídas de fontes de arquivo preservadas no Arquivo Florentino ou em outros institutos de arquivo ou em bibliotecas regionais. De um instrumento elaborado por Ser Santi Jomelli, em 13 de julho de 1598, deduz-se que existiam três ramos da nobre família Gai, a saber:
