Antica famiglia calabrese che si crede originaria da Antonio Savelli romano venuto nel reame di Napoli verso la fine del secolo XIV. Si stabilì nella terra di Aiello ed indi Cosenza ove venne ascritta a quel patriziato. Nel 1592 fu infeudata di Enna Guglielmina, e nel 1698, in persona di Odoardo, della terra di Pietramala, che ritenne sino all'abolizione della feudalità. Fu decorata per successione Rota, del titolo di principe di Cerenzia, concesso originariamente il 14 agosto 1717 a Tommaso Rota. Nel 1761 fu ricevuta per giustizia nell'Ordine di Malta, e nel 1834 riconosciuta ammissibile nelle RR. Guardie del Corpo. I° linea. Odoardo Savelli, patrizio di Cosenza, n. 1874. II° linea. Emilio Savelli, principe di Cerenzia, patrizio di Cosenza, n. 1886.
