I cronisti veneti danno origine a questa famiglia contadina eraclese da quel doge Maurizio Galbaio o Galonio eletto nel 764, facendo derivare dai suoi discendenti nobili famiglie come i Querini, i Calbo e i Canal. Di certo questa famiglia partecipò non poco alla storia di Venezia. Eraclea costituiva la roccaforte dei fedelissimi di Bisanzio, mentre a Malamocco si tendeva di aprire sempre piu' ai Franchi; Maurizio contava molto sui Bisanzio per opporsi alle mire del papa sulle terre lagunari, avendo ormai messo da parte ogni tipo di alleanza con i Longobardi. Infatti egli ottenne dall'imperatore d'Oriente la doppia nomina di magister militum ed ipato, il che provocò la reazione di Desiderio. Il re longobardo, venuto improvvisamente meno all'impegno di defensor della Chiesa, assunto con Carlomagno, ritornato nella sua terra oltralpe, apre le ostilità su tutti i fronti. Devasta il ducato romano, combatte in Istria contro la flotta Bizantina e veneta,
