Antichissimo casato feudatario, originario di Galbiate, sul lago d'Oggiono, propagatosi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Un ramo della famiglia passò a risiedere in Monza, ove, alle volte, trovasi ricordato come "Galbià". Un cospicuo ramo del casato, invece, passò in Milano, ove, con R.D. Motu proprio 7 giugno 1866, venne concesso il titolo di Barone, con trasmissione primogeniale mascolina, a Baldassarre Galbiati Da Galbiate, milanese. Il ramo milanese della famiglia, si è estinto con Carlo, figlio di lui, morto in Milano il 2 nov. 1894. La famiglia è iscritta nel Libro d'Oro della Nob. Ital. e nell'Elenco Uff. Nob. Ital. del 1933, col titolo di Barone (mpr.), in virtù del R.D. di Concess. su detto, in persona di: Baldassarre. La presenza del motto, nella bibliografia documentata della famiglia, inoltre, ci conferma l'avita nobiltà, raggiunta dalla stessa. Motto della famiglia: Vigilando. La famiglia levò per arme.
