Die Familie, die bereits dem sienesischen Adel zugeschrieben wurde, gab verschiedene angesehene Männer, darunter Federico Minister für Gnade und Gerechtigkeit in Rom unter Pius IX. Leopold war ein berühmter Philosoph, Schriftsteller und Senator. Der erstgeborene Zweig der Ottieri Della Ciaia-Marquisen von Rigomagno, sienesischen und römischen Patriziern fusionierte zu dieser Familie. Francesco Ottieri (1685-1742) war ein tapferer Historiker und wurde vom Papst für die sehr hohe Position eines bedeutenden Reiters geehrt. Mit dem königlichen Dekret vom 11. Januar 1900 wurde das derzeitige Familienoberhaupt ermächtigt, seinen eigenen Nachnamen mit dem Namen Ottieri della Ciaja zu ergänzen, und mit dem Kurzpäpstlichen der SS Benedetto XV hatte er den Titel eines Grafen (Diplom vom 23. Juni 1917, das zur Verwendung mit dem Dekret zugelassen war Regio 31. August 1928).
