The surname 'Galloway' originates from Scotland. It is derived from the regional name from the area so called in South West Scotland, whose name derives from the Gaelic word 'gall' meaning 'foreigner' and 'Gaidhel' in Gaelic from the eighth century or before it was a province of Anglican Northumbria. Its Gaelic inhabitants were known as 'the foreign Gaelic's', who from the nineth century onward tended to be allied with the Norsemen rather than with their fellow Gaelic's. Compiled information from Historical and Private archive's has confirmed that the surname 'Galloway' and or it's variant's, dates as far back as the thirteenth century were a 'Robert Galewey', from the county of Oxfordshire, England, is recorded on the Hundred Rolls in 1273. The exact period of settlement in North America has not been definitely determined but Information extracted from Public and Civil registry archive's confirm that one of the first settlers was a certain 'Samuel Galloway', from the Galloway, South West Scotland. He emigrated to North America in 1645, settling in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, and died there on the 17th of April 1719, having had issue one son. Today, 'Galloway' is the 'Eight Hundred and Sixty-Second' most common surname in North America.
