The family went to settle in Ravenna in the mid-fifteenth century with Benedetto; in the seventeenth century it was added to the generous council and shortly thereafter to the Ravenna nobility. In 1665 Paolo di Giovanni Battista married Olimpia di Gregorio Ghiselli, a Bolognese nobleman, the last of his family, who together with the wealth also brought his surname in his husband's family. Several characters of this family distinguished themselves for their high positions and singular literary merits. Giacomo di Paolo and his brother Giovanni embraced the priesthood, and for their knowledge they were awarded high offices by Pope Alexander VII the first, and by the Grand Duke of Tuscany the second, also making themselves praiseworthy for works of no small importance in order to enrich the Church of St. John the Baptist of Ravenna.
