Antico casato sassarese, di chiara ed avita nobiltà, annoverato tra le famiglie più distinte di quei tempi, sia per antico ed illustre lignaggio, sia per ricco censo e per le onorifiche cariche ricoperte, propagatosi, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Italia. Tal illustre famiglia, d'altronde, può vantar diretta discendenza da quell'Itocorre Gambella, consigliere ed amico di Costantino I, regolo di Torres, il quale, venuto a morte, gli aveva affidato in tutela il proprio figliolo Gonnario, che doveva succedergli nel giudicato. In un "condague" leggiamo che le terre di Romangia furono "ab antico" donate dallo stesso regolo di Torres al suo affezionato tutore, in mercede dei servigi resigli. Gonnario Gambella fu il più illustre personaggio sassarese, della prima metà del secolo XV.
