La nobiltà di questa famiglia non ha origine molto antica, tuttavia è da considerarsi fra le più distinte d'Imola. Estintasi la famiglia patrizia Ghetti, diversi membri di altre famiglie aspiravano a sostituirla nel seggio del Comune; ma fra essi fu prescelto dal Consiglio Comunale il dottore Giuseppe Costa di Sebastiano, esimio e provetto medico imolese, il quale fu ascritto al Patriziato il 25 febbraio 1796. Da quel giorno il predetto dottore Giuseppe Costa costantemente fece parte del Consiglio Comunale d'Imola fino a quando il Senato, in seguito dell'occupazione francese, venne a cessare dalle sue funzioni. Anche il di lui fratello Francesco ebbe cariche onorifiche nell'amministrazione comunale d'Imola e segnatamente in qualità di Anziano, titolo che soleva darsi ai soli nobili. Da Francesco discese il dottor Giovanni Andrea, e da questi altro Francesco, tuttora vivente, che sposato ad Angela Avincola, ha avuto varie figlie e cioè Vittoria, Maria, Antonia,
