Diz-se que esta família descende de D. Lopo Dias, senhor de Biscaia, Nájera e Castela-a-Velha, e de sua mulher, D. Aldonça de Castro, pais de D. Sancho Lopes, que vivia pelos anos de 1168 e 1187, de que foi filho D. Lopo Sanches, rico-homem e senhor de Castela-a-Velha, e Urribarri G. pelos anos de 1196, 1204 e 1209. Este D. Lopo Sanches casou com D. Elvira Sanches, filha de D. Sancho Peres de Guevara, rico-homem, senhor de Dicastilho e de Urribarri G., e de D. Andreia Dias de Mena. Teve D. Pedro Lopes de Ayala, senhor de Urribarri G. e das casa de Mena e Unça, herdado nas conquistas de Baeça, rico-homem que esteve ne conquista de Sevilha, casado com D. Maria Sanches, senhora de Unça. Deste casamento nasceram D. Sancho Peres de Ayala de quem procedem os Ayalas, e D. Rodrigo Peres de G., senhor de Urribarri G., do qual provêm os Gamboas. Lopo Sanches de G., filho de Rui Peres de G., viveu na Biscaia, foi governador e alciade-mor da vila de Gustaria, que, durante sete anos, defendeu a favor do Rei D. Pedro, o Cruel, de Castela, contra o Rei D. Henrique II, o qual ficou vencedor, tomando conta do Reino, pelo que Lopo Sanches, com sua mulher e filhos, deixou a Biscaia e passou a Lisboa, em tempo de D. Fernando de Portugal. Viveu na freguesia dos Mártires, onde edificou casas, que ficavam no lugar onde, nos meados do século XVIII, estevam as dos Condes da Ribeira.
