Antiga e ilustre família lombarda, originária de Milão, de clara e ancestral virtude, espalhada ao longo dos séculos em várias regiões da Itália. Os primeiros testemunhos da família podem ser encontrados já no século XVI, com Giovanni Pietro Garavaglia (Milão, 1596 - outubro de 1664), benfeitor do Ospedale Maggiore em Milão, cuja filha, Angela Caterina, tornou-se freira do mosteiro de Santa Caterina alla Chiusa. No século XVIII destacam-se as figuras de Giuseppe Garavaglia, desenhista, e Giovita Garavaglia, gravadora. Ao mesmo tempo, a família possuía imóveis e terrenos em Casate Nuovo. Mas é durante o século XIX que as referências a essa ilustre prosapia se tornam mais heráldicas. De fato, personagens ilustres floresceram nesse período.
