Era questa una delle principali famiglie di Asti, allora questa città si reggeva a comune. Nel 1451 essendo stata trapiantata in Provenza da Giorgio Gardini mastro di casa di renato Re di napoli, ivi fece acquisto di castelli e signorie, e di una torre che fu poi detta poi Gardina. Fu da essa fabbricata nel territorio di Cherasco una magnifica casa, che ebbe lo stesso nome, da un Francesco Gardino, nobile astigiano, dimorante in Cherasco intorno al 1450, Fra gli uomini egregi di questa famiglia in Asti son da notare Rolando figlio Ottone Giardino che fu console in patria nel 1148, altro Rolando che fu uno dei primi tre rettori deputati al governo di quella città dall'Imperatore Federico Barbarossa nel 1159; Nicolò fi egli pure console di quel comune nel 1169; Guglielmo sostenne la stessa carica nel 1202. Un Rebaldo Gardino fu nel 1214 deputato a ricevere la fedeltà degli
