Famiglia originaria di Taranto, dove se ne trovano antichissime memorie. Fu investita di molti feudi, tra i quali il più antico, Carignano, posseduto sin dall'epoca angioina, pare abbia dato il nome alla famiglia. Godette nobiltà in Taranto e trasferitasi nel 1700 in Napoli, vene aggregata al seggio di Portanova. Nel 1780 il duca Giovanni Carignani in occasione del suo matrimonio con una Malvezzi di Bologna fu aggregato a quella nobiltà. Chiara per militare valore e nobili parentele possedette questa famiglia sino all'abolizione della feudalità i feudi di: Carignano, Santa Maria di Novi, San Todaro e Trepuzzi, oltre quello Novoli sul quale venne infisso il titolo di duca per concessione del 1738. Nel 1725 venne decorata del titolo di marchese sul cognome. Con Regio Decreto 22 maggio 1854 questa famiglia fu chiamata a succedere nella sua linea secondogenita discendente da Giulia Pignatelli vedova Carignani, nel titolo di duca di Tolve.
