Vuolsi che la famiglia Gartoni vivesse in Tortona da tempi remotissimi, ma le prime fonti attendibili risalgono al XII sec. e più precisamente da un'antica pergamena fortunosamente pervenutaci tuttora illesa di cui da notizie il Montemerlo (St. di Tortona, 15) ed il Bottazzi (Antichità di Tortona, 319) ove i Gartoni sono annoverati tra le famiglie nobili viventi in Tortona nell'anno 1140; un Guglielmo Artosinus detto Artonus di Cassano è teste in atto del 16 gennaio 1180 relativo alla transazione di una vertenza insorta tra i canonici di Tortona e l'abazia di Rivalta (Carte Capit., I, 106); domino Giovanni è teste in atto del 14 luglio 1185 con cui i consoli di Tortona promettono di salvaguardare i milanesi percorrenti le strade nei territori di loro giurisdizione (Chartarium, 19); detto Giovanni, membro della Credenza, il 29 gennaio 1911 delibera in merito ad un mutuo che il Comune contrae con GuarnerioBeccaria (id., 92);
