Antica famiglia, detta Marzoli, Marzolo o Marzola, della quale si ha memoria sin dalla fine del secolo XV. In quell'epoca possedendo dei beni in Val Tidone, si era collegato coi conti Dal Verme, e ciò per sostenere le ragioni di Lodovico Sforza, detto il Moro, contro le armi di Luigi XII, re di Francia. Ma dopo un esito infelice i conti Dal Verme ed i loro aderenti furono esiliati dallo Stato di Piacenza e spogliati dei loro beni. Dopo però qualche anno i Garzoli tornarono nel Piacentino e si stabilirono sulle colline confinanti con Piemonte. Carlo ebbe, dalla moglie Giovanna Pisani, un figlio dal nome Ludovico, qualificato "magnifico" nei pubblici documenti, e che fu dottore di leggi ed anziano del Comune di Piacenza. Questo Lodovico sposò la Marchesa Giulia Valle Badenchina e ne ebbe il "magnifico" Giovanni Battista anch'esso dottore di leggi ed anziano del Comune di Piacenza, il quale
