Si ritiene che la famiglia sia originaria di Reggio Emilia, passata anticamente a Piacenza, ove il primo di essa ricordato è un Lorenzo, per una eredità Grandone, in un atto pubblico del 1387. Un altro Lorenzo, nel 1575, fu abate col nome di Pietro Barnaba nel convento di S. Agostino dei monaci Lateranensi di Piacenza e, poscia, a Tremiti, dove moriva di veleno, propinato anche al fratello suo Alessandrino sopravvissuto e morto in Ancona, ove rivestiva la carica di comandante di quella fortezza. Carlo, sacerdote, fu chiaro per pubbliche beneficenze e si meritò il nome di padre dei poveri, poiché morendo nel 1687 lasciò un legato per i poveri vergognosi. Giuseppe, con privilegio del duca Ranuccio Farnese del 10 giugno 1767 fu creato nobile assieme ai fratelli e discendenti m. e f. Dal duca Francesco Farnese ottenne per sè e discendenti maschi con ordine di primogenitura e con reciproca sostituzione
