La famiglia figura tra le primarie e nobili di Terni a capo del partito Ghibellino fin dal sec. XIV. Nel 1390 Giovanni di Cola era castellano della rocca di S. Zenone. I suoi discendenti ricoprirono poi sempre le principali cariche civiche: possiamo ricordare: Olivo di Luca di Giovanni (1447); Ugolino (1467); Giacomo (1478); Cristoforo (1481); Martinangelo (1522); Costante (1552) che furono più volte dei Priori. Roberto (1550) ambasciatore al Papa. Mons. Filippo nel 1667 luogotenente del governatore di Spoleto; nel 1690 governatore di Velletri e poi in Amelia; nel 1706 vic. gen. del cardinale Giacomo Boncompagni arcivescovo di Bologna. Mons. Francesco (1697) proton. apostolico e vic. gen. di Todi e di Perugia. Mons. Luigi nel 1759 camer. segreto di Clemente XIII; nel 1765 governatore di Città di Castello, di Ascoli Piceno, di Ancona e di Loreto; nel Concistoro 11 luglio 1803 fu creato cardinale di S.R.C.; egli nel 1782 fu aggregato alla nobiltà di Ancona con tutti i suoi fratelli e loro discendenti. Mons. Francesco nel 1795 vescovo di Città della Pieve, poi di Amelia, e di Todi, prelato domestico assistente al Soglio Pontificio; mons. Carlo cameriere segreto di Pio VI e Leone XII; mons. Ludovico cav. di Gran Croce di S. Michele di Baviera e dei SS. Maurizio e Lazzaro; nel 1802 governatore di Fabriano; e poi di Rieti e della Sabina; nel 1816 delegato apostolico di Ancona, di Pesaro Urbino; nel 1823 pro-legato a Forlì e poi presidente della Comarca; fu creato cardinale di S.R.C. il 28 luglio 1832; nel tempo dei suoi governi egli con i fratelli e loro discendenti fu aggregato ai vari patriziati ed infatti abbiamo: 1809 Patrizio di Terni; nel 1814 Patrizio di Foligno; nel 1815 Patrizio di Spoleto; nel 1821 Patrizio di Pesaro; nel 1802 Nobile di Fabriano; nel 1821 Patrizio di Fano;
