Antica e nobile famiglia austriaca originaria dell' Essia (Hessia Germania) propagata anche in Veneto ove la cognominizzazione divenne Gelain a causa di inflessioni dialettali. L'investitura del titolo è del 19 ott. 1876, lo stemma è così blasonato: Troncato di nero e di rosso, alla fascia d'oro attraversante sulla troncatura accompagnata in capo, sul nero, da due stelle d'oro. Elmo coronato. Cimiero: un volo all'antica con l'ala davanti d'oro e quella dietro di nero caricata di una stella d'oro. Svolazzi a destra d'oro e di nero, a sinistra d'oro e di rosso. Altra famiglia. Antica e nobile famiglia francese della Borgogna propagata, nel corso dei secoli, in diverse regioni d'Europa e delle Americhe.
