Qualche genealogista ritenne questa famiglia dello stesso ceppo di quella degli antichi signori di Gerbais. Favoriva questa ipotesi la circostanza che mentre i signori di Gerbais venivano ad estinguersi con Giacomo, ultimo del suo casato e morto verso il 1354, sorgeva la famiglia de Gerbaix. Ma non deve vedersi in ciò che una semplice coincidenza, tanto più ove si ponga mente che per i signori di Gerbais la loro qualifica si rapportava al feudo, di cui erano signori già dall'inizio del 1200, mentre per i Gerbaix non si tratta che di un cognome di famiglia. Trae questa la sua origine dai due fratelli Pietro ed Amblardo Gerbaix appartenenti a distinta famiglia, ma non nobile, di Belley. Di costoro non è noto il nome dei loro genitori. Pietro e Amblardo furono ambedue successivamente tesorieri generali dei conti di Savoia, e colle loro cariche e colle nobili alleanze acquistarono grande nobiltà,
