Anteriormente chamado Gerifalca e depois Saraceno, ele adotou o novo sobrenome por causa de uma vitória trazida por um bravo capitão contra um bravo sarraceno. Em 1154, Tommaso Saraceno recebeu um feudo do conde de Tricarico, Ruggero Sanseverino. Na fachada lateral da Catedral de Matera ainda podem ser vistos os vestígios de um monumento ou sarcófago (Sepulcrum Judicis Saraceni), que remonta a 1270. Um Giovan-Michele Saraceno foi criado Cardeal da Igreja SR pelo Papa Júlio III, de quem conseguiu renunciar à arcebispado de Matera em favor de seu neto Sigismund. Era o costume das famílias mais antigas, que após a queda do Império Romano, naquele dilúvio dos bárbaros, tendo seus sobrenomes, assim como seus estudos, e outras coisas bonitas perdidas e deixadas apenas com nomes simples, desenhavam seus sobrenomes , e sua família por nomes próprios paternos e pelos principais.
