Il primo di questa nobilissima casa di cui si abbiano notizie sicure è Gherardo, del quale sappiamo che professava legge longobarda, possedeva ampia signoria nelle maremme di Volterra e di Pisa, ed era morto prima del 990. Si vuole che egli discendesse da S. Walfredo; figlio a sua volta di Ratcauro, cittadino pisano, nato da Pemnone, duca del Friuli, e quindi fratello dei Re Longobardi Rachi ed Astolfo. Ratcauro sarebbe stato inviato da Liutprando a liberare la Maremma dai Saraceni; in primo avrebbe avute molte di quelle terre, alle quali il figlio Walfredo (che dovrebbe identificarsi nel fondatore e primo abbate dell'abbazia benedettina di S. Pietro di Palazzolo, morto nel 765 e subito elevato agli onori dell'altare) avrebbe poi aggiunto i possedimenti corsi tolti ai Maomettani. Per quanto queste tradizioni non trovino conforto nei documenti, sta di fatto che i beni indicati nella carta di fondazione dell'abbazia di Palazzolo sono
